So last night I was listening to Ms MELODY THORNTON’s mixtape ‘P.O.Y.B.L’ and it is, quite frankly, all sorts of awesomery. Her vocals are so on point from her runs and riffs to her beautifully rich tone. The best vocals I’ve heard from her. Ever. The soulful ‘Sweet Vendetta’ kicks off the 10 track offering, following a short intro and then we dive right into her take on Jay & ‘Ye’s ‘No Church In The Wild’. She’s aggressive, she hits hard, she sure can BELT and she means business. I can hear her hunger and her passion. It’s all over this record.
“Piss On Your Black List has nothing to do with being a rebel or fighting against anything. It has everything to do with fighting for myself,” she says. “It’s clever with attitude. It’s kind of funny and gets a strong reaction; all things that, at times, describe my art.”
But seriously, you can really her that she’s matured both vocally, but also artistically. It’s clear to hear who she is as an artist. At just over half an hour, the 10 track mixtape is a delight and the talented songstress has served up something very strong! She’s vulnerable on ‘Loving You Better’ and back to her powerful self on the final song, ‘Hit The Ground Running’, but one of the highlights is easily her dope cover of La Roux’s ‘Bulletproof’. The slowed down version is amazing and her more mellow vibe is complemented wonderfully by Bobby Newberry who features on the track. ‘Someone To Believe’ may though, be my favourite song on the record. It’s like the lovechild of Janelle Monáe and Lana Del Rey. It’s divine and epic and exactly how I feel at this moment in time. Listen to it (and the whole mixtape) below…and download it for FREE!
Here’s hoping this mixtape is the appetiser, the starter, the teaser before a studio album drops, hopefully with some kick-ass backing from a major label, ‘cos she definitely has what it takes to rival her contemporaries without a doubt.
